Terahertz Therapy Side Effects

Terahertz therapy is a newly emerging therapy that has been gaining traction for its potential to treat a variety of medical conditions. It involves the use of terahertz radiation – a form of electromagnetic radiation – to treat medical conditions. Most commonly, a device known as a terahertz healing wand or terahertz therapy device is used to administer the treatment.

Whilst terahertz therapy is still in its early stages of development, it has already shown promise in treating several medical conditions such as sciatica, back pain, autoimmune disorders, cancer, psoriasis, Bell’s Palsy and heart disease to name a few.

According to an article published by the Journal of Biomedical Optics titled Terahertz radiation and the skin: a review, “THz radiation is non-ionizing and is considered to be safe for humans at low powers.” However, as with any medical treatment, there are potential side effects associated with terahertz therapy. This post will discuss some of them and also look at treating cancer with terahertz radiation therapy.

Can terahertz therapy cause problems?

The most common side effect associated with terahertz therapy is skin irritation. This often occurs after multiple treatments, when the skin is exposed to prolonged terahertz radiation. The skin can become red and irritated, and may even blister. Wearing light clothing can minimize this during treatment and avoiding prolonged exposure to terahertz radiation.

Another potential side effect associated with terahertz therapy is fatigue. Patients may experience fatigue or exhaustion after treatment, which can last for a few days. This is usually due to the body’s response to the terahertz radiation and can be managed by resting and drinking plenty of fluids.

There is also a risk of terahertz radiation exposure to the eyes. Patients should wear protective eyewear when undergoing terahertz therapy to prevent any damage to the eyes. Eye irritation may occur if the patient is exposed to too much radiation. This can be managed with over-the-counter eye drops.

In rare cases, terahertz therapy may cause an allergic reaction. Allergic reactions can range from mild skin irritation to more severe reactions, such as difficulty in breathing. Patients should be aware if they have any underlying issues before using terahertz therapy and inform their doctor if any signs of an allergic reaction occur.

Other patients have noted an increase in their body temperature, as well as an increase in their heart rate and blood pressure. This is usually due to the body’s response to the terahertz radiation and is not usually a cause for concern. However, if the heart rate or blood pressure remains elevated for an extended period, it is important to seek medical attention.

Overall, terahertz therapy is a promising new therapy with great potential to treat a variety of medical conditions. Side effects seem minimal and they are less than other similar therapies. However, there are potential side effects associated with terahertz therapy that patients should be aware of before undergoing treatment.

Terahertz radiation therapy in cancer treatments

Terahertz radiation therapy in cancer treatments

The use of terahertz radiation therapy in cancer treatment is still in its early stages of development and there is still much that is still unknown about its safety and efficacy. However, the initial research results are promising and suggest that further research is warranted.

An article entitled Sensitivity of Neuroblastoma and Induced Neural Progenitor Cells to High-Intensity THz Radiation from February 2023 stated the following.

“Successful examples of THz diagnostics include skin, oral, gastric, breast, cervical, prostate, and brain cancers. High power sources of THz radiation enhance the depth of penetration into water-containing biological tissues and may improve anti-tumor treatment through the demethylation of malignant DNA at a specific frequency. Intense THz pulses were shown to induce concerted positive changes in the expression of genes related to inflammatory skin diseases and cancers, which gives rise to potential medical applications for this technique.”

A paper called Potential clinical applications of terahertz radiation published in 2019 stated, “Demethylation using the resonant absorption of high-power THz radiation might induce a similar effect, enhancing the efficacy of cancer treatment.” Demethylation is used in cancer treatments such as chemotherapy. The paper further went on to say “There is a possibility of improving the cancer treatment outcome by breaking the methyl-DNA bond using THz radiation at the resonance frequency instead of decitabine, which exhibits clinically significant side effects.”

The following quote is taken from the Journal of Lasers in Medical Sciences 2021 study entitled A Review of Feasible Applications of THz Waves in Medical Diagnostics and Treatments. “THz radiation is also used in the treatment of diseases including various cancers. One of the biggest challenges in cancer medicine is targeting malignant cells while at the same time targeting healthy cells. The higher water content of cancer cells than healthy cells and the high absorption of THz by water molecules have made it possible to treat them with THz rays in addition to detecting cancer cells.”

The review went on to report, “Terahertz radiation can produce thermal effects and raise the temperature. THz radiation with higher power and longer duration can provide the first thermal effects to affect the cells of the animal, and then it is possible to destroy cancer cells by using the thermal effects of THz radiation.”

In 2019, a research article called Effective demethylation of melanoma cells using terahertz radiation was published. One of its conclusions was “These results provide initial data for THz demethylation and demonstrate the applicability of this technique in advanced cancer cell research. THz demethylation has the potential to develop into a therapeutic procedure for cancer, similar to that involving chemical demethylating agents.”

Many more studies are being conducted that show the potential for terahertz radiation usage to combat cancer and many other medical issues. Time will show its effectiveness but for now, the future of terahertz therapy looks positive. Here are some  terahertz therapy wand testimonials
